Autonomy and Functionalization – an Aesthetic-Cultural Historical Analysis of the Concept of Art in the Fine Arts in Berlin from the 1990s to Today

How have artistic practices and the concept of art changed in the period since 1989 until today? What role played the concrete historical circumstances of the political change? The question of the relationship between autonomy and functionalization focuses on the development of Berlin's visual and performative arts in comparison to developments in London, Vienna and Warsaw since the 1990s. The project, which is headed by Professor Judith Siegmund (Universität der Künste), is being conducted by UdK scientists in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin and the Weissensee-Kunsthochschule as well as the Humboldt-Universität (HU) zu Berlin.
