Canadian physician Gordon Guyatt and the Psychological Science Accelerator honored as this year's recipients of the €500,000 prize for enhancing quality in research

Which methods can be used to evaluate and appreciate the quality and impact of research achievements? And what criteria should be used as a basis for assessing scientific research? These questions were the focus of a joint event organised by the Einstein Foundation Berlin, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) and the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) yesterday evening in Berlin.

The Einstein Foundation’s Executive Board has awarded funding to five international fellowships at Berlin universities and will also be supporting the research of two scholars already working in the German capital as Einstein Junior and Einstein Research Fellows. The Board has also approved the extension of six Einstein Visiting Fellowships and one Einstein Research Project. In addition, two PhD programs have been recognized as part of the recently launched Einstein Foundation Doctoral Program.

Kathrin Susanne Zippel, a highly regarded professor of sociology, has been awarded an Einstein Strategic Professorship from the Einstein Foundation Berlin and will move to Freie Universität.

Effective July 1, 2022, Ludovic Vallier will take up the W3 Einstein Strategic Professorship for Stem Cells in Regenerative Therapies at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH). Vallier is an expert in pluripotent stem cells.

The new grants and extensions amount to around 2.3 million euros in funding and will be awarded until 2025.

After twelve months of preparation, the new Einstein Center for Alternative Methods in Biomedical Research will officially be launched this week. The Einstein Foundation will provide financial support amounting to €5.3 million until the end of 2026, but will make part of its funding subject to the Center's positive interim assessment by the Foundation's independent research board in 2024.

The Einstein Foundation will in future be supporting neurobiologist Susanne Schreiber as an Einstein Professor at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. With the help of additional funding from the Einstein Foundation, the university was able to counter an offer from another university, thus ensuring that the expert in theoretical neurophysiology will now remain in Berlin.

The Deutsche Universitätsstiftung (German University Foundation) and the Stifterverband (a joint initiative between companies and foundations) have jointly declared the Einstein Foundation Berlin the 2021 German Research Foundation of the Year.

With support from the Einstein Foundation, Berlin’s universities have successfully attracted four pioneering international researchers.

The €500,000 Einstein Foundation Award for Promoting Quality in Research will honor researchers and institutions whose work helps to advance the quality and robustness of research findings.

The board of the Einstein Foundation approved the preliminary stage of a new Einstein Center for the development of alternative methods for animal testing in biomedical research. The aim of the planned center is to reduce or replace animal experiments.

The Einstein Foundation Berlin supports students to be temporarily employed in the primary medical care within the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. For this purpose, the Einstein Foundation will provide the Charité with 300.000 Euros as part of the “Einstein Student Support for Corona Medical Emergency” program.
