Maxwell Ware is moving from Colorado State University to join the Emmy Noether Independent Junior Research Group of Dennis Nürnberg at the Freie Universität Berlin. The Nürnberg research group is primarily interested in a process called far-red light photoacclimation (FaRLiP) which allows cyanobacteria to thrive in strongly shaded environments using near-infrared radiation. This research project will combine expertise in biophysics, molecular biology and cyanobacterial physiology to elucidate the mechanisms underpinning cyanobacteria-plant symbioses and FaRLiP. The team will attempt to establish whether far-red light driven cyclic electron transport can be employed during symbiosis as a biological alternative for nitrogen fixation in crops.
