The Einstein Foundation Berlin was established in 2009 as a foundation under civil law. Its founder is the State of Berlin, which, in addition to the endowment of five million euros provided in 2009, provides the Foundation with annual state funding for its operations and promotional activities. The foundation also receives matching funds, i.e. for every euro raised privately, the foundation receives 50 cents from the state of Berlin.
