Nediljko Budisa's research goal is to "experimentally modify the genetic code". The Artcode project attempts to take a step in this direction by altering the codon through directed evolution of cells. The aim is to create an industrially relevant artificial but biologically safe host cell for the production of new proteins (biomaterials) and peptide-based drugs.
