Einstein Research Units enable the Berlin University Alliance to establish inter- and transdisciplinary research clusters in research areas of particular strategic relevance. The Einstein Foundation Berlin organizes the review process for applications; the funding decision is made by the Berlin University Alliance.
Eligibility: The Berlin University Alliance institutions (Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin) are eligible to apply. At least two of the above institutions have to cooperate in the envisioned Einstein Research Cluster. Applications are submitted via the Berlin University Alliance head office.
Funding period: Three years, with the option to apply for a two-year extension following a positive interim evaluation. A two-year preparation module is optional.
Volume: Up to €2 million per year, up to €400,000 per year for preparation modules. Funding for a preparation module is deducted from the total funding made available to a later Research Unit. Funds can be used to cover personnel expenses, directly incurred costs and investments (with the exception of construction costs).
